Gee, I thought only I was having this problem. I run Vista 64 Home Premium. It only started doing this last week.
I will try any and all of the above. (My family thinks its me causing this trouble) (I don’t remember having this much fun when I had a Palm!) (Apples are looking tastier!)

I tried following these instructions and the best I could get was everything but files synchronized. If I went beyond step 19, WMDC upgraded itself to 6.1. If I then tried monkeying with any settings to get the files to synchronize I landed right back at step 1 again with a “problem with your connection” error. So for the time being, I’m standing pat. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve rebooted and reinstalled WMDC. The only step I did not perform was deleting entries from the registry. There were dozens of keys named “windowsmobile”, and I was more than a bit nervous that I would just end up trashing my system. BTW – on my computer wmdc.exe was wmdcbase.exe.

If you know of anything that can fix the file sync problem, let me know. I’ve done everything I can. There a checkbox in WMDC 6.1 labeled “Allow data connections on device when connected to PC”. I tried changing that. I also tried hard resetting my mobile device, which is not a phone. I’m pretty convinced that the problem is not with the device. Maybe there’s something in the registry, but I don’t really know much about that so I am avoiding it. I can’t find any other setting that appears to block or allow files to sync. I even switched virus scanners and ran a complete scan of my system. All I can do is hope that a fix comes out for this eventually. I wonder if Windows 7 would offer any improvments?

I’m having the exact same issues, when i get to step 14 i’m finding over 400 registry entries related to windows mobile even after uninstalling the software. Did you deleter every single one of these entries?

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you! This was just killing me, I spent over 6 hours today researching this mess. Then I happened upon your page. I couldn’t be happier with you and more pissed at Microsoft right now. Thanks a million for your advise, I was at my wits end.

Agreed. Be careful with starting a gmail sync as it will most likely wipe the contacts in your phone. See my post How to backup contacts on windows mobile to backup everything before starting a sync with gmail or any other sync service.

Errgh, the procedure for removing WMDC is horrible. When things go wrong, WMDC is a terrible piece of software. I’ve given up and am now using gmail’s sync features, basically it’s a free Exchange server and this works fine.
