Gee, I thought only I was having this problem. I run Vista 64 Home Premium. It only started doing this last week.
I will try any and all of the above. (My family thinks its me causing this trouble) (I don't remember having this much fun when I had a Palm!) (Apples are looking tastier!)

I tried following these instructions and the best I could get was everything but files synchronized. If I went beyond step 19, WMDC upgraded itself to 6.1. If I then tried monkeying with any settings to get the files to synchronize I landed right back at step 1 again with a "problem with your connection" error. So for the time being, I'm standing pat. I can't tell you how many times I've rebooted and reinstalled WMDC. The only step I did not perform was deleting entries from the registry. There were dozens of keys named "windowsmobile", and I was more than a bit nervous that I would just end up trashing my system. BTW - on my computer wmdc.exe was wmdcbase.exe.

If you know of anything that can fix the file sync problem, let me know. I've done everything I can. There a checkbox in WMDC 6.1 labeled "Allow data connections on device when connected to PC". I tried changing that. I also tried hard resetting my mobile device, which is not a phone. I'm pretty convinced that the problem is not with the device. Maybe there's something in the registry, but I don't really know much about that so I am avoiding it. I can't find any other setting that appears to block or allow files to sync. I even switched virus scanners and ran a complete scan of my system. All I can do is hope that a fix comes out for this eventually. I wonder if Windows 7 would offer any improvments?

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you! This was just killing me, I spent over 6 hours today researching this mess. Then I happened upon your page. I couldn't be happier with you and more pissed at Microsoft right now. Thanks a million for your advise, I was at my wits end.

Agreed. Be careful with starting a gmail sync as it will most likely wipe the contacts in your phone. See my post How to backup contacts on windows mobile to backup everything before starting a sync with gmail or any other sync service.

Errgh, the procedure for removing WMDC is horrible. When things go wrong, WMDC is a terrible piece of software. I've given up and am now using gmail's sync features, basically it's a free Exchange server and this works fine.
